Chapter Seventeen

AT THIS time of year, passage to Iceland was fairly easy to obtain. Annarr had cultivated friendships with certain merchants over the years, and some had their own vessels. The difficulty lay in getting to town and managing to catch a knarr on its way to Iceland before it left. Rolf could make the arrangements for Alfdis and Kol, but they still needed to get to him.

For this, they were given the use of two horses owned by the farm. The horses could make the journey in a little under a day, and Rolf could return them to the farm later.

At no point was the possibility of not going to Iceland even mentioned. Harek had been Alfdis’s closest family member, and not even Annarr dared forbid her from making the journey. As to what had happened at the homestead, Alfdis had seen it in a vision as well, but had little more detail than Kol. Of one thing, however, she was utterly certain: Harek had been killed, stabbed from behind.

There was little time to pack. But they hadn’t arrived with much a year and a half ago and had acquired little else by way of personal possessions in the meantime. Annarr gave Alfdis some money for travel expenses. Then he and Ari saw them off, Ari surprising Kol by grabbing him in a bear hug.

“I guess I’ll finally get a decent night’s sleep now,” the young man said, letting him go and giving him that charming smile. “But I’m going to miss you. Take care of yourself.”

Kol felt a wave of warmth toward his friend but could think of nothing more to say other than, “You, too.”

And then Kol helped Alfdis up onto her horse and climbed onto the one he’d been given. A few minutes later, they’d left the farm behind them.
